Get to Know Our New Flavors

It has been a month since the launch of our two new Sel Marin flavors, and we couldn’t be more excited! The warmth of the flavors has already inspired us to create tons of delicious recipes in preparation for the crisper air. We’ve been sprinkling both our fennel and pink peppercorn infused sel gris on everything: squash, potatoes, carrots, fish, steak, chicken, salads, popcorn… absolutely everything!

But you might be wondering, “What exactly are fennel seeds and pink peppercorns that make the new sel gris flavors taste so incredibly unique?”

Fennel is a perennial herb that has a taste similar to that of black licorice but in the best way. The herb itself is quite bulbous in frame with protruding stalks that resemble celery. When just using the seeds (as we do in our sel gris), the unique aroma closely resembles that of sweet anise seeds. When infused with citrus and our sel gris, the combination can freshen and warm up any dish. We find that it pairs perfectly with any grilled or baked fish, chicken, soup or roasted vegetables - especially carrots or squash!  Our partners in France source the fennel from their provider in Provence- the same one who gives us our lovely herbs in our popular herbed salt mix.

Pink peppercorns, or coined as Baies Roses in French, are beautiful dried berries of the Baies Rose plant. Our paludiers (salt farmers) get them from a provider who sources them from Madagascar. Its bright red, decorative appearance allows the spice to stand out on any shelf. Its flavor strikes a delicate balance of aromatic pepper and sugary notes of anise. When paired with our peppery sel gris from Brittany, it’s a pepper lover’s dream! We recommend sprinkling generous amounts on any red meat for that ideal BBQ flavor or enhance any roasted vegetable plate or salad dressing with a breath of pepper!
